HOW TO STOP A WINDSCREEN CRACK SPREADING!
Getting any size of crack in your windscreen can be a huge inconvenience. As much as you’d like to shrug it off and keep on driving, these cracks have the potential of spreading much further after the accident occurred. Even the smallest cracks should never be ignored, and you should always give Champion Autoglass a call if you’ve got a cracked windscreen. But if you’re looking for a few quick pieces of advice, we’ve got your back.
Here are a few tips on how to stop your windscreen from cracking further. You could be saving yourself on a full windscreen replacement if you’re lucky!
BRING OUT THE TRUSTY SUPERGLUE OR NAIL POLISH
We know what you’re thinking. Superglue and nail polish?! Although these are by no means going to fully fix your windscreen crack, they can be a quick temporary fix before you get an auto glass repair company to attend to the issue. Now before jumping in with the glue or clear nail polish, you’ll want to make sure that the windscreen glass is clean and free of any dirt or glass. After this, you can insert the glue or polish into the chip and leave it to dry. After it’s completely dried, carefully place a transparent piece of strong packaging tape over the crack just to keep dirt and residue out.
We generally don’t recommend this as it’s only a temporary little solution to give you a bit more peace of mind until you get the crack fully repaired.
TRY AND PARK YOUR CAR IN A SHADY AND SECURE SPOT
This tip is more so that your car isn’t being unnecessarily exposed to more extreme temperatures. Parking your car in the direct sunlight on a hot day could see the crack spread further. This is because glass contracts and expands in different temperatures. You might also want to stop using the window defroster until you’ve had the crack fully repaired.
On the subject of extremes, try to avoid taking your car down any particularly bumpy or rocky roads. Drive very slowly over speed bumps and just be generally mindful of the crack at all times.
USE A WINDSCREEN REPAIR KIT
If you consider yourself a bit more savvy when it comes to repair work, you might want to consider picking up a windscreen repair kit. The special resin contained in this kit will be inserted into the crack to help prevent the windscreen from cracking further. You’ll need a 1/16 inch drill bit to create a little hole on the top layer of the windscreen. After this, you can then insert the resin into the seam.
Bear in mind that these repair kits won’t be able to give you the same results that a professional could deliver.
