Can you drive with a broken rear windscreen?
Aside from being a real pain, having a smashed rear window leaves your car open to theft and damage from rain and wind. But if you’re wanting to get it fixed ASAP, can you drive with a broken rear windscreen? What are some temporary fixes for the problem?
Although you’ll need to get the window replaced at some stage (preferably earlier rather than later) there are a couple of temporary fixes you can make in the meantime. After carefully cleaning up the broken glass from inside the car and around the outside with proper protective equipment, think about doing one of the following:
- Taping up the back
You’ve probably seen a few people do this to their side and back windows with rubbish bags, but securely taping up your back windscreen can be a quick and easy temporary fix before you get it replaced. Running tape along the frame of the back window and making sure the bag is taut are the real key points here.
- Using plastic as a cover
If you’ve got some heavy-duty plastic on hand, you might want to think about taping the plastic into the space left by the broken window. You can use some duct tape to hold the plastic firmly in position in the back window frame. The main goal here is to provide your car with some level of protection until you get it properly fixed.
